On June 20, 1967, a jury  for the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas, Houston Division, returned a verdict of guilty against Ali on the charge of violating the Universal Military Training  and Service Act because of his refusal to be inducted.    Judge Joe Ingraham sentences him to a term 5 years imprisonment and a fine of $10,000.  Ali appeals the next day and is released on bond.
Aside from exhibition bouts Ali would remain inactive from 3/23/67 to 10/26/70

FROM THE BOOKS
In 1968, Belinda (his wife) and Ali had their first child, a girl called Maryum, but this piece of good news was offset by hearing in May that the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals had affirmed his conviction (refusing induction into the U.S. Army). At the end of the year, Ali was sent to prison for ten days-not for anything to do with his ongoing legal battle, but for driving without a valid license in Florida. Ali had never been locked up before so prison was quite a shock, even though it was only for a short period, but he said he was prepared to go back inside for what he believed in, if he had to.
