FROM THE BOOKS
In a fight promoted by the great Tex Rickard, and which grossed more than a million dollars at the gate, Dempsey, the world heavyweight champion, was pitted against the popular French war hero, Carpentier, who was the light-heavyweight title holder. The gallant Frenchman broke his thumb in the second round and was counted out in the fourth.
