FROM THE BOOKS

Perhaps the most amazing thing about Jeff Fenech was that his early success came when he was still a raw fighter with an unrefined technique and an obvious lack of experience: he learnt his trade on the job, and got better every time he entered the ring. One of the highlights of his career was his emphatic victory over Marcus Villasana, which turned into a superb exhibition of ring mastery. Another was a hard-fought fight against Azumah Nelson, in which Nelson was lucky to escape with a draw; although an eventual defeat by the same boxer in March 1992 represented a major set-back. Nevertheless Fenech, by virtue of holding three titles and of gaining world recognition for Australian boxing, lays claim to being the greatest of all the products of the Australian fight game: he is revered as a national hero.
