CUBAN KEEPS TITLE ON SPLIT DECISION
Gavilan Rallies After Being Floored in Second Round and Outpoints Basilio
Kid Gavilan encountered the most stubborn and unlooked-for opposition in the defense of his welterweight championship of the world against Carmen Basilio of near-by Canastota tonight. The Cuban from Camaguey gained the decision all right, after fifteen rounds of torrid battling, but the award was a split one and was unpopular with the bitterly partisan crowd. The onlookers, some 7,500 in number, were virtually unanimous in belief  that their favorite had won, and for a time the referee, George Walsh, appeared in danger of an attack. Some of the more irate Basilio sympathizers in the Syracuse War Memorial Auditorium tried to "get" Walsh as he left the ring but he received excellent protection and was untouched.
