The life story of Larry Holmes is a classic rags to riches tale. He was one of eleven brothers and sisters, and when he was a youngster he was forced to work as a shoeshine boy to earn much-needed cash for the family. When he was not on the streets seeking customers with tarnished shoes, however, he was in the gym learning to box. He nearly represented the United States at the 1972 Olympic Games but was disqualified in the final of the Olympic Trials for holding Duane Bobick. Not prepared to lose anymore time as an amateur, he turned professional in 1973 and launched a career that was to make him a millionaire several times over.
