As a boy, Evander Holyfield found that coaches tended to underestimate him. Most thought he was too well-mannered and too small to be taken seriously. But Evander took himself seriously, even if nobody else did. At eight years old he knew what he wanted. The boxing room at the Atlantaboy's club, where he spent much of his youth, drew him like a magnet. The gruff coach first stirred the warrior within Holyfield by telling the boy he needed to toughen up. Evander rose to the challenge. As he strived toward personal excellence, he soon realized that things were not always fair, not in the ring and not outside. But where others might have given up, Evander used each defeat as a stepping stone to higher ground. This was a lesson he learned from two of his toughest coaches: his mother and grandmother. In a sport with a reputation for brutality and corruption, Holyfield's combination of grit and grace has earned him the nickname "Real Deal" and a unique reputation in the boxing world: "champion" on both sides of the ropes.
