Born: Archibald Lee
Wright
Light Heavyweight Champion 1952-62
Archie Moore recorded more knockouts than anyone else in the long
history of boxing, with 131 lights-out punches. Moore's career lasted 27
years, and it seemed as if "The Old Mongoose" would never stop fighting.
Respected by both fans and his boxing colleagues, Moore stayed active
through the pre-war, post-war, and television ages. Born in Mississippi
around 1913, Moore moved to St. Louis as a youth. He was convicted of
stealing money from a streetcar and served two years in reform school,
where he learned to box.
